Accommodation: Hotels in Scotland Hotels in Edinburgh Edinburgh Hotels Edinburgh Scotland Travel
- Edinburgh, the inspiring capital of Scotland, is a
historic, cosmopolitan and cultured city. The setting is wonderfully striking;
the city is perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky crags which rise
from the generally flat landscape of the Lothians, with the sheltered shoreline
of the Firth of Forth to the north. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city-centre
skyline and from its ramparts you can look down on medieval lanes and elegant,
sweeping terraces that hold over a thousand years of history, mystery and
tradition. Yet you will also see a modern, dynamic capital where international
festivals attract the world's leading performers, galleries display
cutting-edge art, and bars, restaurants and clubs create a lively, cosmopolitan
atmosphere with a distinctly Scottish twist. 'Edinburgh,' said writer Robert
Louis Stevenson, 'is what Paris ought to be'. Edinburgh Districts Central Edinburgh has two distinct parts, divided by Princes Street Gardens, which run roughly east-west under the shadow of Castle Rock. To the north, the dignified, Grecian-style New Town was immaculately laid out during the Age of Reason, after the announcement of a plan to improve conditions in the city. The Old Town, on the other hand, with its tortuous alleys and tightly packed closes, is unrelentingly medieval. There's a great deal to be discovered by exploring beyond the compact centre of Edinburgh, in particular along the Firth of Forth coastline to the north and the rise of the Pentland Hills to the south. Just over a mile northeast of the city centre is Leith, the historic port of Edinburgh, a fascinating mix of cobbled streets and new developments, run-down housing and some of the city's top restaurants. Nearby you can find a flavour of the city's maritime and fishing heritage at the atmospheric harbour of Newhaven, while the long beach at Portobello is still a popular spot on a sunny day. To the northwest of the city are the more placid charms of the old Roman village of Cramond.
